17th Match Delhi Daredevils V Bangalore Royal Challenger

Delhi Daredevils Wickets vs Royal B. Challengers [30/04/08]

Gambhir and McGrath put Delhi back on track

Delhi Daredevils 191 for 5 (Gambhir 86, Dhawan 50) beat Bangalore Royal Challengers (Kallis 54, Dravid 38, McGrath 4-29) by ten runsScorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHow they were out

Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan laid out the carpet and Glenn McGrath, returning the best figures in the IPL's brief history, walked over it as the Delhi Daredevils got themselves back on track after a blip in their last game. It wasn't a comfortable win, as the Bangalore Royal Challengers kept them to 191 for 5 when 205 seemed an easy total and later when Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid threatened to chase it down, but another choke from the visiting side - who for the third game running left Misbah-ul-Haq on the bench - put Delhi at second in the points table.
The Feroz Shah Kotla track wasn't known for any major assistance to seam or swing and Dravid's decision to field on a sluggish surface with variable bounce ultimately turned out to be a mistake. After a quiet first over, Gambhir waded into the Bangalore attack in stunning fashion. First he took Zaheer Khan for three fours, a delectable square cut tucked between two shots off the pads, and then hit Dale Steyn for a couple more. Virender Sehwag hit a few lusty shots before he was run out for a 12-ball 24, but Gambhir applied himself excellently.
Scoring wasn't easy given the low bounce but shuffling and waiting for the ball to come onto him - there were certain shots that had to be checked as the ball stopped on him - he slashed boundaries backward of point and pulled through the infield.
With Dhawan very solid at one end, and consciously playing the ball along the ground, Gambhir backed his judgment of the track to slash boundaries backward of square both sides. Bangalore pulled back the scoring for a couple overs but Sunil Joshi, replacing Anil Kumble, had a torrid first over that went for 19 as both batsmen picked up sixes. Dhawan, upright and packing his drvies with power, scored at a very healthy clip. A massive slog off Kallis took him to 49, and he looked set to press on after his fifty but a stunning catch from Dravid at midwicket cut him short.
Steyn and Kallis rattled the stumps to check Delhi's middle order and, having lost strike for a brief while, Gambhir slogged Zaheer to midwicket for 86 from 54 balls. Delhi were on target for over 200 but those strikes left them short.
They may have been a tad disappointed by not going further but with McGrath leading a tidy pace they backed themselves. The maestro, bowling as metronimically as he did in his pomp, needed five deliveries to remove Praveen Kumar, flicking to midwicket, but his double-wicket third over was massive: Ross Taylor's gung-ho approached ended in a top-edge to deep midwicket and Wasim Jaffer did the same to mid-on.
From 48 for 3 after five overs Dravid and Kallis, with near 20,000 Test runs between them, added 87 in 10.3 overs. Yo Mahesh and Rajat Bhatia went for 26 in two overs through classy, low-risk shots before pumped sixes lowered the asking rate further. Kallis went past his previous IPL best, mostly with shuffled flicks, and Bangalore needed 58 with seven wickets and 30 balls remaining. That's when Sehwag tossed the ball back to McGrath. Three balls later Dravid was walking back for 38, his slog into the starry night setting into Sehwag's palms at mid-on. McGrath finished with 4 for 29, a special and memorable effort.
Kallis thumped himself past fifty but a fourth miserly over from another one-day international master, Daniel Vettori, effectively killed all hopes. Vettori allowed just five singles and cleaned up Kallis with a quick arm ball off the sixth. That left Bangalore with 30 to win from six balls and it proved too much for Mark Boucher, who still hit two sixes and a four.
Eleven out of 16 matches have been won by sides chasing but Bangalore failed to master two crafty bowlers when it mattered most. Delhi, despite the departure of Vettori, remain one of the better sides in the tournament.

Jayasuriya and Bravo seal Mumbai win

Mumbai Indians 138 for 3 (Bravo 62*, Uthappa 37*) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 137 for 8 (Shukla 40*, Jayasuriya 3-14) by seven wickets

Inspired by Sanath Jayasuriya's 3 for 14, the best figures of the tournament, the Mumbai Indians put their off-field troubles aside and pulled off their first win. On a slow Eden Gardens pitch, though not the minefield of the previous game, Mumbai had a nervy start and were 25 for 3 before Dwayne Bravo and Robin Uthappa put on a century stand to see them home.
After Kolkata Knight Riders chose to bat, Mumbai's stand-in captain Shaun Pollock stunned the huge crowd, removing local hero Sourav Ganguly and the dangerous Brendon McCullum in the first over. Ganguly chased at a wide delivery and only managed a thick edge that was smartly held by Jayasuriya at wide slip. McCullum was trapped lbw for 1 two balls later, leaving Kolkata at 6 for 2.
The early momentum was provided by Twenty20 debutant Debabrata Das. Pollock was hit over midwicket for a big six and three leg-side fours followed in the next couple of overs. Das favoured the cut and got his innings going with two of them off Ashish Nehra in the second over, but another one off Dwayne Bravo flew straight to Robin Uthappa at point.
Bravo kept it just short of a length and outside off, giving away only four runs in two overs. Ponting and David Hussey consolidated for a couple of overs with singles and the odd boundary. Ponting was unable to get his timing right or middle the ball, and Hussey tried to up the tempo slamming Pollock for two fours.
Jayasuriya, tossing it up instead of firing it in as he usually does, broke the partnership by luring Hussey into swiping one to mid-on in the 11th over for 17. His next over, a maiden, saw two wickets fall as well. A run-out put Ponting out of his misery and two balls later Mohammad Hafeez nicked one to the wicketkeeper Pinal Shah as Kolkata slid to 77 for 6.
Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who revived Kolkata batting with a quick 42 against the Chennai Super Kings, was called on to rescue his team yet again. He smashed two fours and a six each off Bravo and Dilhara Fernando as 44 runs were scored in the last four overs.
Despite the below-par score, Kolkata refused to surrender and their new-ball bowlers gave them an excellent start. Ajit Agarkar had Ajinkya Rahane chipping to midwicket in the third over and, at the other end, Jayasuriya was in a fascinating battle with Ishant Sharma. After several swings-and-misses and powerful hits to the boundary, Ishant sent Jayasuriya's off stump cartwheeling. Manish Pandey then fell for a duck to the impressive Ashok Dinda and, at 25 for 3, Mumbai were in danger of squandering their advantage.
Jayasuriya's 4-1-13-3 are the best figures so far in the tournament, and he gave away just one boundary in his spell, which included a wicket and a maiden © Cricinfo Ltd

Uthappa and Bravo, though, carried them to victory with a century stand for the fourth wicket as the spinners were unable to carry on the good work of the fast bowlers. Uthappa had a chancy start - Das grassed a sharp chance at point, and there were several close shouts for lbw - before he unfurled some horizontal-bat shots and his favourite paddle.
Bravo played a stylish knock in which two shots early on stood out - an audacious back-foot square-drive off Ishant and a cracking lofted on-drive off Hafeez. They were some lovely straight hits as well in his unbeaten 64 - the highest score by a Mumbai batsman in the tournament.
The win, and news that their icon Sachin Tendulkar is likely to be fit for the next game, is a relief for Mumbai, who lost their first four games and will miss the services of US$850,000 signing Harbhajan Singh for the rest of the tournament after his row with Sreesanth during the match against the Kings XI Punjab.
After a thumping start, Kolkata's magic looks to be wearing out. None of their batsmen, besides McCullum, have made a half-century and, to make matters worse, they will be missing much of their batting firepower after this game - McCullum and Ricky Ponting leave to fulfil international commitments while a groin injury has forced Chris Gayle out of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians hoardings with Harbhajan removed

MUMBAI: After being booted out of the Indian Premier League for slapping a rival player, Harbhajan Singh is experiencing a new low with his franchise team Mumbai Indians having decided to remove hoardings with his picture dotting Mumbai.
"The process of removing the team's hoardings with Harbhajan Singh is on and some posters have already been taken off from the various spots in the city," informed a source connected with the Mumbai Indians team on Tuesday.
The off spinner, who led the team in the first three matches all of which were lost in the absence of regular but injured skipper Sachin Tendulkar, was found guilty of assaulting King's XI (Punjab) bowler and India teammate S Sreesanth after the IPL tie at Mohali on April 25.
Match referee Farokh Engineer, who viewed a footage of the sordid episode, decided to chuck Harbhajan out of the remainder of the Twenty20 League as well as impose a monetary fine of 100 per cent (close to Rs 3 crore) on the player's match fees after calling the two players for a hearing in Delhi. Harbhajan's name has also been removed from the team list in the franchise squad's website, but his photos still figure in the photo gallery.

Chennai Super Kings VS Bangalore Royal Challengers 1st INN H

Super Kings beat Challengers by 13 runs

BANGALORE: Chennai Super Kings strolled to their 4th consecutive win, drubbing Bangalore Royal Challengers by 13 runs in the 15th IPL match. Scorecard
On an otherwise tumultuous day for the IPL, there fortunately was some worthy on-field action in the Bangalore Royal Challengers versus Team Chennai game. Some fiery bowling from South African Dale Steyn and some equally forceful counter-attacking batting by Team Chennai skipper MS Dhoni set the tone on Monday.
The Royal Challengers dominated the early part the innings after Team Chennai decided to bat first, but some lusty hitting from MS Dhoni (65 off 30 balls, 9x4, 3x6) and Michael Hussey (47 from 37, 3x4, 2x6) took them to a formidable 178/5 from their 20 overs.
Dale Steyn was quick, touching the 144-kmph mark in his very first over of the tournament, on a firm pitch full of bounce. That was until Dhoni decided to take him on, roared on by a non-partisan crowd.
Till then the Chennai batsmen, Mathew Hayden included, had been kept in check by a charged-up home team, with the first ten overs yielding just 65. Walking in at the fall of Suresh Raina's wicket, the young left-hander having done his bit with a 17-ball 28, Dhoni, as is his style, took his time before launching into the Challengers with typical brute force.
Soon, Steyn was rendered clueless. An impressive first spell of 2-0-8-0 gave away to a final reading of 4-0-40-0 as Dhoni, with Michael Hussey in tow, took his side from 102/3 at the end of the 15th over to the eventual 178/5.

Katich and VRV Singh set up Punjab's win

Simon Katich's last game of the IPL turned into a memorable one as he steered Punjab's run-chase against a formidable Delhi bowling line-up in Mohali. After a four-pronged pace attack had made use of a surface that offered bounce, keeping Delhi down to a modest total, Katich's innovative methods helped Punjab to their second successive win in the competition. After watching two early losses, Priety Zinta has plenty of reasons to smile.
Delhi's bowlers had set up both their earlier wins but their batsmen squandered the early advantage at the toss here. A string of sketchy cameos allowed them to reach a competitive total but even the usually niggardly bowling line-up had no answer to Katich's cheeky shuffles.
Punjab might feel they under-used Katich - sent in at No.5 in their first game, where he was up against an near-impossible asking-rate, and missing out on the next two. Opening the innings here was the ideal platform, though, and he did what no other batsman has managed to in the tournament: hit Glenn McGrath and Mohammad Asif off rhythm. The duo had got Delhi upbeat with a wicket apiece but neither could contain Katich's counter-attack.
McGrath was struck for two successive fours twice while Asif was a bit confused after a hat-trick of boundaries - scooped over extra-cover, scooped over point and pulled to fine leg. Full or short, they were all put away.
He should have been out on 26, when an inswinging yorker from McGrath had him plumb in front, but Rudi Koertzen, the umpire, suggested there was an inside edge. Batsmen talk of playing in the V and Katich managed that both in front and behind the wicket. Two delectable straight drives, either side of the stumps at the non-striker's end, had McGrath muttering.
Simon Katich scored plenty of runs in the V in front of and behind the wicket © Cricinfo
But what really messed with the bowlers' plans were his nimble shuffles across the stumps, gliding and flicking past the keeper. Walking across the stumps, he regularly played the pick-up shot to fine leg and whenever offered width he didn't waste the chance to angle the bat fine. He fell with just 40 needed, a task which Yuvraj Singh made sure was accomplished without too many jitters.
The game had been set up by the bowlers earlier. Irfan Pathan and Brett Lee made the early breakthroughs and were well backed up by VRV Singh and legspinner Piyush Chawla. They used the short ball effectively, amply illustrated by Shoaib Malik's tame upper-cut that sailed straight to Lee at third man. Pathan's two wickets - one an in-ducker to nail Virender Sehwag, the other a quick one that knocked back Rajat Bhatia's off stump - made him the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.
VRV was the most effective, ending with three wickets and conceding only 29. He hustled with pace and regularly surprised the batsmen with bounce. Dinesh Karthik had no clue to one that took off from a good length, flicked the glove and raced away over the keeper for four, and Manoj Tiwary too was in trouble against some well-directed bouncers.
Sehwag threatened to carry on from where he left off in the previous match but was trapped in front while shuffling across to Pathan. Shikhar Dhawan was unlucky to be given out to a Lee bouncer, when the ball actually brushed his shoulder, but the rest didn't have too many excuses. Malik, Karthik and Bhatia chipped in with cameos, all helping Tiwary in the rebuilding process but it was always going to be too little a total to defend, what with the fast outfield and the boundaries pulled in.
Batting for the first time in the tournament, Tiwary showed his ability to handle both spin and pace, sweeping Chawla and lofting Lee. He was in a good position to boost the total at the death - well set in the 18th over and striking it clean - but VRV's short ball did for him as well, as he top-edged one straight to mid-on. Lee ended with only one wicket but he will leave for Australia with the satisfaction of playing a part in the side's early revival.

Gilchrist leaves Mumbai gasping

Adam Gilchrist ignited the DY Patil Stadium with the fastest century of the tournament as the Deccan Chargers raced to their first win. The battle between the two bottom-ranked teams was a no-contest once Gilchrist teed off, and Deccan charged to an emphatic ten-wicket victory in the first major game at the stadium.
Andrew Symonds had got a century off 47 deliveries the previous game but Gilchrist needed only 42 as he decimated the weak Mumbai Indians' attack on a small ground. The intent was aggressive right from the word go, and Gilchrist made use of short deliveries in the first over from Ashish Nehra, dispatching one over square leg and the other through cover point.
Pulls and cuts were played with ease as Mumbai's quicker bowlers erred in their length, and after six fours, Gilchrist hit his first six, lofting Sanath Jayasuriya over deep midwicket. Siddharth Chitnis, the off-break bowler making his Twenty20 debut, was spared by going only for 12 in the last Powerplay over, but Shaun Pollock, leading Mumbai in Harbhajan Singh's absence, was taken apart once the field restrictions were off.
Gilchrist savagely pulled Pollock over the deep backward square-leg boundary for consecutive sixes, the first bringing up his first Twenty20 fifty. The shot that followed pierced the off-side boundary, and Gilchrist then nonchalantly moved across the stumps to launch one over long leg, making it 23 for the over.
Abhishek Nayar's arrival was greeted with three sixes, the third over midwicket brought up the hundred, and more astonishing was the fact that he had reached the mark as early as on the stroke of the tenth over. From then on, victory was just a formality, and Deccan reached their target with 44 balls to spare, both indication of the fury that had been unleashed. At the other end, VVS Laxman scored just 36 in a stand of 155, easily the highest of the tournament. Mumbai might have been at the receiving end, but the home crowd too cheered what had been an enthralling innings. Ninety-six of Gilchrist's 109 came through boundaries, making it a busy day for the Deccan cheerleaders, who were sporting a new outfit.
A new home ground and a new captain surely didn't bring about a turn of fortunes for Mumbai, and Deccan justified Laxman's decision to field first by restricting them to 154. Laxman's captaincy had come under the hammer after three consecutive losses, but on Sunday he was right on the ball. He was quick to shuffle around his bowlers, who to their credit, backed up their captain's decision with some good bowling.
It was only the string of 30s from the middle order that helped Mumbai reach 154. Pollock made a run-a-ball 31 to revive the innings, but it was the quickfire 34s from Nayar and Dwayne Bravo that ensured the Mumbai bowlers had a decent total to defend.
Jayasuriya and Luke Ronchi had failed to make an impression in earlier games, and they were kept quiet once again, despite the short boundaries, by RP Singh and Nuwan Zoysa. Ronchi hit three fours, but fell attempting to slash a wide delivery angled across from RP, edging straight to Laxman at slip.
Sanjay Bangar was brought on in the fourth over, perhaps to help Zoysa change ends, and Ajinkya Rahane, another Twenty20 debutant, pulled straight into the hands of Pragyan Ojha at deep square leg. The next move from Laxman though was a masterstroke. Shahid Afridi was brought on in the final over of the Powerplay, and he had Robin Uthappa caught behind. At the end of six overs, Mumbai were tottering at 27 for 3.
Jayasuriya had made only 4 off his first ten deliveries, and one pitched short from Zoysa fetched him his first boundary, which came off his 14th. But, once again Afridi did the damage, Jayasuriya got a top edge as he tried to power a googly through the leg side. The onus was then on Pollock to hold the innings together, but he too couldn't stay till the end.
Nayar smashed three sixes in his 19-ball innings, as 45 runs came in the overs 14 to 16. But he top-edged to Gilchrist while trying to hook Zoysa. Bravo too managed to find the gaps, and was out for 34 off the last ball of the innings as Mumbai finished on 154. However, with the form Gilchrist was in, even 254 would have been tough to defend for Mumbai, who now have four losses after four games, and sorely need Sachin Tendulkar to return.

Hayden and Oram crush Kolkata

Chennai Super Kings went on top of the table after an efficient performance from the bowlers - reckoned to be the team's weak link - set up a convincing nine-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders. After Kolkata were restricted to 147, Matthew Hayden's superb unbeaten 70 ensured there were no hiccups in making it three wins out of three.
Jacob Oram and Muttiah Muralitharan were the stand-out bowlers for Chennai, but the Indian bowling contingent backed them up well. Oram nailed the explosive pair of Bendon McCullum and Ricky Ponting early to give the huge home crowd something to shout about. Muralitharan's restrictive spell - he finished with figures of none for 12 from four overs - then frustrated the visitors and ensured Oram's good work wasn't wasted.
Kolkata were reeling at 70 for 5 after ten overs, with all their marquee names dismissed, and in danger of getting bowled out without utilising their full quota of overs. Laxmi Ratan Shukla, though, ensured they avoided that embarrassment as his late-order hitting earned 39 runs off the last four overs.
The early impetus for Kolkata was provided by Brendon McCullum, who silenced the crowd with some brutal hitting. There were no half-measures as he raced to 24 off 12, reclaiming the orange cap for the tournament's leading scorer in the process, before holing out to Suresh Raina at extra cover off Oram. Ricky Ponting's dismal run continued, falling for a duck as he drove his first ball straight to Raina at cover.
Kolkata's other wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha took the baton from McCullum, making a streaky, quickfire 27 - a top-edge off Manpreet Gony flew over the wicketkeeper for four and a similar shot off the next ball went for six. His luck then ran out and he was bowled by a ball that jagged back in.
Kolkata got off to a superb start, but they lost their way in the middle overs (click here for a bigger image) © Cricinfo

Despite losing wickets, Kolkata's run-rate still hovered around ten after six overs, and with David Hussey and Sourav Ganguly in, a big score was still on the cards. The next four overs, though, emphatically handed the advantage to Chennai, as only 11 runs were given away and both Hussey and Ganguly were removed.
Ganguly, who had been starved of the strike when McCullum and Saha were blazing away, was cramped for room by Muttiah Muralitharan's leg-stump line and struggled to get the ball away. He finally fell for a scratchy 12, in the 10th over, gifting a catch to S Badrinath at cover after failing to pick a slower one from Joginder Sharma.
For a team which has run up scores over 200 in both their games so far, this was a straightforward chase. Hayden and Parthiv Patel, while not at their fluent best, put on the biggest opening stand of the tournament as they motored to 66 in 8.2 overs, peppering the offside boundary. While this was nearly the same number of runs Kolkata had managed at a similar stage, by keeping their wickets in tact, Chennai made sure they were well in control of the game.
Ajit Agarkar then demonstrated his penchant for taking wickets again, getting Patel to top-edge a catch to Ishant Sharma at fine leg. Hayden had struggled early on with his timing but soon displayed his trademark power-hitting, going on to his second consecutive fifty. He and Dhoni, who promoted himself to No. 3, eschewed the risks and calmly chipped away at the target, never allowing the run-rate to get out of hand. Towards the end, with the result beyond doubt, they opened up to take Chennai home with 19 balls to spare.

Royal chellengers lose the game to rajasthan royals

A splendid all-round display enabled Rajasthan Royals cruise to a comfortable seven-wicket victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League tournament on Saturday.
For the second successive time, the Bangalore outfit failed to rise to the occasion in front of the home crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium making just 135 for eight in 20 overs after being invited to bat.In reply, the team led by legendary Shane Warne chased it losing only three wickets with 17 balls to spare.Man of the match Shane Watson, who dismissed both Dravid and Chanderpaul early, stole the show with a well compiled unbeaten 61 off only 41 balls with eight fours and two sixes.Graeme Smith made a useful 49 before departing just before victory was achieved
Earlier, a superb bowling effort, well supported by effective fielding, on a helpful wicket meant that it was Rajasthan Royals' day.Rahul Dravid falling on first ball, trapped at the fine leg boundary by Ravindra Jadeja off Shane Watson, was an ominous start for the local team. His opening partner Shivnarine Chanderpaul, claimed by the same combination when the West Indian top edged the bowler two overs later was a cruel blow.
Though towards the end, the Bangalore outfit was helped by a breezy knock from Praveen Kumar, who was particularly harsh on the legendary Shane Warne, it was Ross Taylor (44 from 20 balls with six fours and three sixes), who provided some respect to
Taylor consolidated the innings with some lusty hitting before seeing the back of his partner Jacques Kallis (11).Taylor's contribution was 32 in a 43-run stand the two put on for the third wicket.Warne, who became only the second player to bowl a maiden over in the IPL tournament after compatriot Glenn McGrath, got some rough treatment at the hands of Praveen, who made 34 off 30 balls with two fours and three sixes before getting run out
However, Praveen was at the receiving end when Rajasthan Royals batted, as he was clobbered for 26 runs in the 14th over by Shane Watson, who hit five fours and one towering six over midwicket.Watson, who joined Graeme Smith at the fall of Yusuf Pathan's wicket, took Rajasthan Royals to the brink of victory in a clinical fashion adding 104 runs for the third wicket in 76 balls.Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are now on top of the table with three wins each although Rajasthan have played four games to Chennai's three.

The actor is figuring in a promotional video campaign to muster support for the team through a Hindi song “Duniya Hila Denge Hum (Let’s rock the world)”.
The franchisee also announced the ticket prices for the first two matches that the team plays at the Wankhede Stadium here and D Y Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, on April 20 and 27 respectively.
“The ticket price ranges from Rs 250-500 to the upper end Rs 3000-5000 for the first match while for the second match it ranges from Rs 200-400 to Rs 1000,” he added.

I am excited to play with Sachin : Jayasuria

Former Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya is looking forward to play with Sachin Tendulkar in the upcoming Indian Premier League Twenty20, starting here on Sunday.
“I am very happy I will play with Sachin Tendulkar. Besides I will get an opportunity to start the innings with him,” said Sri Lanka’s former skipper with a chuckle to the media persons here on Wednesday.
After a long pratice session at Bandra Kurla Complex facility, he said, “I got the first opportunity to play with Sachin during a charity match in England. Now IPL has given another opportunity to play with him.”
When asked about how he felt playing with youngsters at the age of 38, Jayasuriya shot back,” I do not think so. I am still a young player both on and off the field.”
The Lankan hero said his team Mumbai Indians was all prepared for the IPL.
“We know our strengths and weaknesses. We are also preparing to counter the opponents in every match. We will try to keep Mumbai flag high,” he said

Kallis and Boucher to stay back in India

South African players Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher might be good enough for the Bangalore IPL franchise to justify paying almost US$1.5 million for them, but they are not good enough to make their domestic Twenty20 squad. Both are therefore staying in India and not returning home with the rest of the South African Test squad.
Both players, as well as Ashwell Prince, represent the Cape Cobras in the Standard Bank Pro20 tournament in South Africa. Shukri Conrad, the Cobras' coach and convenor of selectors, chose to include Graeme Smith and JP Duminy from the six nationally-contracted players but could find no place in his team for Prince and seamer Monde Zondeki as well. Smith and Duminy replace promising youngsters Richard Levi and Stiaan van Zyl.
A statement from the Cobras said that Kallis, Boucher and Prince were now "free to stay on in India to participate in the new IPL league if Cricket South Africa (CSA) gives them the go ahead."
Conrad felt the Cobras were faced with "an embarrassment of talent and choices" and it had been a difficult call to make. "Did the selectors completely reshuffle the team by packing in the six national players or did they back the current crop who had brought the Cobras unbeaten to the knockout stages of the competition? said Conrad. "The selectors opted to go for continuity, with some batting reinforcement at the top of the order, but it was not an easy decision since the national players are so self evidently great talents and had indicated they were keen to play."
Andre Odendaal, the Cobras' chief executive, emphasised that the national players put their obligations to South Africa cricket first and had been keen to play for the Cobras.
"We appreciate the fact that Cricket South Africa went out of their way to ensure they were available and that they were all prepared to come back for the final two weeks of the Pro20, even at the risk of losing considerable income in India. The Cobras selectors have now made their call and our three players can now participate in the launch of the IPL. Indeed, the team was selected early so that they knew where they stood and were not uneccessarily inconvenienced."
Cape Cobras squad: Graeme Smith, Andrew Puttick, Herschelle Gibbs, JP Duminy, Henry Davids, Vernon Philander, Rory Kleinveldt, Tyron Henderson, Con de Lange, Ryan Canning, Charl Langeveldt

Pakistan’s National T20 championship postponed due to IPL

The Pakistan Cricket Board has been forced to postpone its national Twenty20 championship due to the Indian Premier league (IPL) starting April 18.
An official of the board said no dates had been set for the domestic T20 event although the original plan was to hold it early in the year.
“All the main players will be going to the IPL after the Bangladesh series. And the sponsors don’t want an event without the leading names,” the official said.
The T20 competition is one of the most successful domestic tournaments in Pakistan and the last three editions have drawn big crowds with all the leading players also making it a point to play in the event.
The official said the tournament would now probably be held sometime in August and could be renamed as the Pakistan Premier League.
“August is the best time for us to hold the competition now because all the players would be available to us,” he added.
A dozen Pakistani players are signed up to play in the IPL.

Two-year waiting period for retiring players to join IPL

Players signing up with Indian Premier League (IPL) will have agree to a two-year waiting period between retiring from international cricket and joining the league, chairman Lalit Modi has said. Interested players will have to get No-Objection Certificates (NOC) from their country’s board.
Modi said the league did not wish to harm the other forms of the game. “This [NOC] will prevent players from retiring before their home boards want them to,” Modi told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Players will have to think twice if they are considering an early retirement to join us. The IPL has no interest in jeopardising international cricket or home boards. The keys are in the hands of the board.”
Tim May, the chief executive of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, had earlier said any move by national boards to stop such retirements, or to ban players who join Twenty20 leagues, could be a restraint of trade and might result in court action.

Sri Lanka board drops Jayasuriya from contract list

COLOMBO, April 11: Sri Lanka Cricket have virtually shut the door on the continuation of Sanath Jayasuriya's international career by dropping him from the list of contracted players for next year. Daily Mirror newspaper quoted selection committee sources as saying that they have "decided to drop the veteran all-rounder from a list of players to be contracted for next year". The 38-year old master-blaster, who retired last year from Test cricket, has represented Sri Lanka in 110 Tests and 411 One-Day Internationals and was dropped for the ongoing tour of West Indies due to poor form.
"Jayasuriya will only be offered tour contracts if he is selected", selection committee sources said. "Only four 'A' grade players such as Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas have been picked for next year," sources said. Jayasuriya is one of the highest paid cricketers in Sri Lanka, currently earning around $100,000 per year. The interim committee of SLC will take up the contracts for final approval after head Arjuna Ranatunga returns from a private tour overseas.
"We will offer the player contracts after the interim committee approves the list. There are a few issues still to be discussed such as the amount of money offered for each contract category and the composition of players in each category," SLC chief executive officer Duleep Mendis said. The ageing Jayasuriya became the third highest paid player of the Indian Premier League when he was sold for a whopping $975,000 at a players' auction earlier this year.

IPL tickets to range from Rs 100 to Rs 12000

With eight days left for the launch of the Indian Premier League, several franchises have started selling tickets for the matches. The prices range from Rs 100 [approx US$2.5] to 250 [approx $6.25] at the lower end and Rs 5000 [$125] to 12,000 [$300] for the corporate boxes. Tickets are already available online for the games to be held in Kolkata and Mohali, while the rest will be available from April 11.
While the likes of Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai have their premium tickets priced pegged at approximately Rs 5000, Mohali is charging Rs 12,000 for tickets for seats in the premium South End pavilion.
"As a thumb-rule, ticket prices are half that of an ODI," Charu Sharma, the chief executive of the Bangalore franchise, said. In the high-end hospitality areas, ticket-holders will be served alcohol, which will also be sold in a few high-priced ticket enclosures.
Teams play seven home games. In a scenario where tickets are sold out in Chennai at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, which has thrown open 34,450 seats to the public, the gate money [not including the season tickets in consideration] that will be accrued for one game is approximately Rs 3.6 crores ($900,000) and Rs 25.2 crores ($6 million) for the seven games. Assuming a 50% turnout they will net around Rs 12 crores ($3m) from the tournament. According to the rules, 20% of the gate money will go to the local host association while the franchise will net the remainder.
However, the tickets for Kolkata games, currently available online, will be offered in outlets only on April 14 after they settle the issue of giving CAB members their share of the tickets. "Not many people buy online here," the spokesman for the franchise said. "We will first give the members tickets on discounted rates before offering to the public in outlets."
The other associations are not facing too many hurdles with the members. "We will be allotting them tickets in the normal members' area and there has been no issue so far," IS Bindra, the president of the Punjab Cricket Association said.

Pepsi pays $12.5 mn to be official IPL drink

NEW DELHI, March 18: Pepsi will be the official beverage of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) for five years and the deal with the soft drink giant has been struck at $12.5 million. Well-placed sources in the IPL said only the eight franchise owners would benefit from the deal. Pepsi, which has a long association with Indian cricket, has been the main sponsor of India's domestic tournaments for several years and has also been associated with the International Cricket Council (ICC) as its global sponsor. A significant part of the deal is that the eight franchises - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Mohali, Jaipur and Hyderabad - will be the direct beneficiaries of the money accruing from the sponsorship.
"Pepsi will pay $2.5 million each year and, importantly, the entire income from this deal will go to the eight franchise owners," according to the IPL sources who did not wish to be identified. In other words, each franchisee stands richer by $312,500 per year. The team owners benefiting from this deal are Mukesh Ambani's Reliance, which bought Mumbai team for $111.9 million, Deccan Chronicle (Hyderabad, $107.01 million), Vijay Mallya's UB Group (Bangalore, $106 million), India Cements (Chennai, $91 million), GMR Holdings (Delhi, $84 million), a consortium led by Preity Zinta (Mohali, $76 million), Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies (Kolkata, $75.09 million) and Emerging Media (Jaipur, $67 million). The Twenty20 tournament, comprising 59 matches, will be played over 45 days starting April 18. Matches will be telecast live on SET Max, which along with World Sports Group paid $1.026 billion to get the television rights for 10 years.

News agencies to ignore IPL

The Press Trust of India (PTI) has joined international agencies in calling for a modifications in the media guidelines for the Indian Premier League, failing which they have decided to ignore the event.
PTI's reluctance to accept the terms and conditions will no doubt come as a big blow to the IPL, considering the reach that the agency enjoys across various Indian publications. "We have not applied for accreditation [the last date was April 10] because the current terms and conditions are not acceptable to us," VS Chandrashekar, an executive editor with PTI, told Cricinfo. "We will cover the event only if the media guidelines are changed."
The Indian Newspaper Society, a representative body of newspaper publishers, also joined in the chorus of voices against the media guidelines. The INS has noted with disappointment that the "revised" media accreditation terms put out by the IPL do not constitute a significant improvement over what was put out earlier and have in fact failed to address the issues of intellectual property rights of the media as well as press freedom, INS president Bahubali Shah said in a release.
Meanwhile, the IPL is sticking to its guns. "According to us there are no issues. We have had a formal discussion with all parties concerned, and they had agreed to the drafted guidelines," Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, told Cricinfo when asked about the news agencies' threat to ignore the tournament. "We have had 1200-plus applications [for accreditation] till last evening.
Despite the IPL releasing fresh terms and conditions after vociferous protests from the media against its original guidelines on accreditation for the event, news agencies are still left high and dry because they are prohibited from selling photographs to websites.
The News Media Coalition, the umbrella body that has under its wings global news and photograph agencies Reuters, Associated Press, Agence France Presse and Getty Images, had expressed deep concerns about limitations on access imposed by the IPL.
Barry Parker, AFP's South Asia bureau chief, stuck to his earlier stance and it is learnt that Reuters and AP, the two other major international agencies, were also of a similar view.
Modi had an almost two-hour meeting with representatives of various media in India on Monday, and all parties announced later that they had removed most of the bottlenecks. Even then, some of the contentious clauses remained, including the ban on selling photographs and the bar on representatives from websites covering matches.

ICC approval for IPL, no backing for ICL

DUBAI, March 18: International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday gave a stamp of approval to the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) while refusing to recognise the Indian Cricket League (ICL). Announcing a host of decisions at the end of two-day meeting of the ICC Executive Board, president-elect David Morgan said IPL was official cricket just like the County Championship in England whereas ICL was unofficial as it was not approved by the BCCI.
"Since ICL is not approved by BCCI so it is unofficial cricket," he said. Morgan said the Executive Board agreed that the IPL was a good concept and although the introduction of privately owned franchises introduced risks to the game, it also provided possible benefits. The Executive Board, however, stressed that "the concept of nation-versus-nation cricket was the life blood of Members and this must always be given the highest possible priority."
The board made it clear that bilateral commitments of Members would take precedence over IPL fixtures and BCCI, as owners of IPL, will have to agree to certain guidelines. "In order to maintain that position (of priority), the ICC board and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) agreed that the BCCI, as the owner of IPL, would sign a standard-form contract with all ICC Members," Morgan said.
"Each ICC Member will have an unfettered right in its absolute discretion to lodge an objection to a player from its country playing in the IPL, and this objection can be lodged up to two years after that player's retirement.
All such objections will be respected by the IPL and its various franchises and the player in question will not be selected to play." The ICC board also asked IPL to introduce a code of conduct, an anti-corruption code and an anti-doping code that comply with ICC regulations. Morgan clarified that no request has been made by the IPL or BCCI to adjust the Future Tours Programme to accommodate IPL matches.
"The ICC will monitor IPL's progress over the next few years and work with the BCCI to ensure that it works in harmony with international cricket," he said. Morgan also made the formal announcement that South African Imtiaz Patel was ICC's preferred candidate for the position of chief executive. "As announced on Tuesday the ICC board has selected South African Imtiaz Patel as its preferred candidate for the position of chief executive. Pending negotiations with Patel it is hoped that he will take over from Malcolm Speed during the ICC's annual conference at the end of June," he said.
Regarding the 2011 World Cup which will be jointly hosted by Pakistan, India Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the ICC board decided upon a 14-team format and to significantly shorten the duration of the mega event than the last one in the West Indies. The 10 Full Members qualify automatically while the remaining four places going to the semi-finalists of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, which will take place in Dubai next year.
The ICC board also re-iterated that "as of now" the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan as scheduled earlier and a full independent security assessment of the situation there will be conducted in June. "As it stands, the event will go ahead in Pakistan as planned from September 11 to 28 in three venues, which will be finalised in due course," Morgan said. A detailed forensic report produced by KPMG South Africa and KPMG Zimbabwe regarding the 2005-06 accounts of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) was considered by the ICC Audit Committee which reported to the ICC Executive Board.
In its review of the ICC Audit Committee report, the ICC board accepted that the KPMG report had found no evidence of criminality and that no individuals had gained financially. The board, however, noted that the report highlighted serious financial irregularities. ZC reported to the ICC board that it had taken substantial remedial action to correct these irregularities and would continue to do so. The Executive Board also gave green signal to the trialling of the increased use of technology by umpires during the Test series between England and South Africa this year subject to the consent of the England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket South Africa.
The trial will involve a system whereby players can request that umpiring decisions be reviewed by the TV umpire. The ICC Cricket Committee will be charged with determining and finalising the playing conditions for the trial subject to the proviso that the method of review should incorporate the principle of consultation with, rather than referral to, the TV umpire.
The board also welcomed Sri Lanka's world cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga to his first meeting as an ICC director. Ranatunga is the newly appointed chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket and before the meeting started he received his ICC director's tie from president Ray Mali.

IPL website on April 7, BCCI portal in July

CHENNAI, March 26: The multi-million dollar Indian Premier League (IPL) will launch its website next month while BCCI's much awaited portal will see the light of the day in July this year. IPL will launch its website on April 7, to be run by a North America-based company which will also develop a portal for the BCCI.
"BCCI/IPL has negotiated a contract with a North American based company to run and operate its portals and the minimum guarantee has been negotiated at $50 million over the next 10 years," IPL sources said. "There will be further revenue share of 50-50 from the first dollar earned by the company. The IPL portal will be launched on April 7 and the BCCI portal towards July this year," the sources added. Meanwhile, BCCI's Working Committee meeting has also decided that the board and IPL will have a 50-50 share with Bangalore franchisee United Breweries Group of the cost of the grand opening ceremony in Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18. The meeting has also approved ITC Welcome Group hotels in the eight cities where the IPL matches are to be held as official hotels for three years and Kingfisher Airlines as official airline for the same number of years. The Working Committee also decided to hire Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri as star commentators for the IPL and approved and earlier decision to award the first year of production of IPL matches to IMG.
